Highland gets split; Blackwell drops DH

A scoring drought in the second half proved costly as Highland’s girls lost for the first time all year, 52-32, at Robert Lee on Tuesday in a battle that pitted two top20 ranked basketball teams.

Highland (5-1) was outscored by Robert Lee 33-11 after leading 21-19 to end the first half. However, the Highland boys came back to take a 40-30 win over the Robert Lee boys to finish off the doubleheader.

Hunter Heady paced the Highland boys’ win by scoring 19 points. The Hornets led 15-11, 27-17 and 34-25 at the breaks to improve to 2-3 overall. Kort Sargeant had nine points.

Taylor Allen, meanwhile, had 12 points and Kaelyn Bankhead nine to pace the Highland girls.

Highland hosts its annual Hilltop Classic tournament starting today.

Blackwell lost both ends of its doubleheader Tuesday vs. Veribest. The girls lost by a score of 54-14, while the boys lost 48-33.

The Lady Hornets (4-4) were paced by Tori Campos’ 10 points while Kyler Cummings scored 10 points, Landon Whitten nine and Dawson Dominey eight for the Hornets. Blackwell is in a three-day tournament at Munday that starts today.
