“Deliver me from temptation, Lord”

BETHEL ASSEMBLY OF SWEETWATER

“But the LORD has been my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge”

The “New” New Year?

I don’t know about you, but I have been thinking recently that “Back-to-School” seems much more like the beginning of the year than January 1. I’m not real sure why this is the case, it just seems that way to me. Maybe because our students are experiencing so many new things all at once. Maybe it’s because there are new clothes, shoes, and backpacks. There are new lunch boxes with the thermos inside (mine was the “Welcome Back Kotter” version I wish I still had!). There are new pencils, pens, and notebooks. Hopefully, there will be new friends, great teachers, and wonderful new experiences. I suppose the beginning of school feels like the New Year because of all this “newness.”

There is a genuine excitement with the “New” New Year. And, there is also some real nerves too. I suppose some of those nerves would come from the unknown anticipation that goes along with something new. But, this usually only accelerates the anticipation and excitement.

As we all know, it only takes a few days for the “new” to wear off, and we are back in the swing of school. The new clothes begin to wear out, our new teachers seem more familiar, and the pencils get shorter and shorter with every sharpening. Before we know it, the real New Year is upon us and we’re half way finished.

You know, there is another “new” that is spoken of in the Bible. When we come to know Jesus as our Savior, 2 Corinthians 5:17 calls us “New” Creations. There is a real excitement and a light to our lives that has never been there before. The Light of the Lord Jesus comes in to bring this “new” refreshing. It is such a beautiful thing to watch. It is even better to experience this newness in one’s own life.

Too many times, however, like the worn down pencil, the newness wears off. The Christian life seems to become mundane. We might even find ourselves wandering back into the darkness. Let me encourage you during this “Back-to-School” season, get refreshed! Get renewed! Get back in the light of the Lord Jesus and celebrate the “New” New Year!

These things may be concerning to you, but they haven’t taken the Lord by surprise. God knows the future of everyone and everything, and you need a Savior. Jesus offers us help here as well as eternity with Him.
